Grade 6: The Arts: Exploring Forms and Cultural Contexts
C3.1 identify and describe ways in which awareness or appreciation of music is affected by culture and the media (e.g., people attend concert of music that they know and like or have found out about through the media; people can be influenced to buy products that are advertised with music that they relate to)
Progressivism believes that students should have firsthand experiences with reality and what better way to do that than through the media? By using real life situations and resources that students are exposed to in the real world inside the classroom helps to better prepare them when they are faced with these situations. Music has always been a key element of culture and modern media have guaranteed that it is constant presence in every aspect of our lives. Therefore, it should make appearances in the classroom so that teachers are able to help students fully understand it and use it properly, and in a way that will advance their learning. Music allows people to have a voice on issues that they may not be able to get out otherwise.
WHAT: Music can spread like wildfire through the media and millions of people can listen to a new song within the first 24 hours of release. Thank to the constant presence of media, artists use music as a way to promote awareness about issues in the world and to voice their opinions on subjects that matter to them. Music grows with our culture and exposes us to new relationships as well as giving us a new perspective on matters we wouldn’t have known. This gives students a social interaction and awareness of their community that is an important aspect of my curriculum theory.
HOW: Students will be asked to address certain topics and issues our world has faced or is still struggling with through the use of music. For example, Michael Jackson’s ‘We are the World’ collaboration with dozens of artists raised awareness and proceeds to the disaster in Haiti. Another example is the environmental effect we have on the planet as described in Tracy Chapman’s ‘Rape of the World’. Students will present how the music uses the media to affect change and to influence people to donate to charity, to buy products, and to raise awareness about issues. The main question: why is music so evident in affecting our lives?
WHY: Students need to be active agents in their own learning but also in society. By working on this assignment, students will gain a deeper understanding of the importance of music and how it impacts our daily lives. With this knowledge, students will be able to incorporate it into other aspects of their studies to raise awareness of other issues. Music can change our perspective in any situation and gives us the reassurance we need to do something whether it is through consumerism or through charity.
WHERE/WHEN: Students will have use to computers to allow them to assess multiple media sites and sources. Time outside of the classroom will be required for students to see the effect of the media in their home environment and in the community to see the use of televisions, computers, tablets, cellphones, etc.
